Remembrance Day ceremonies in Calgary commenced November 1st, with the Field of Crosses starting 11 days of ceremonies honouring Canada’s veterans. This day of remembrance is observed on November 11thand recognizes the sacrifices made by armed forces members who died in the line of duty.
This morning at sunrise, we remembered the women of war who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom from the First World War to present day. Field of Crosses honours nine remarkable women for their service and sacrifice throughout Canada’s military history including one fallen in the First World War, seven fallen in the Second World War and one fallen in Afghanistan.
One Nursing Sister who made the ultimate sacrifice was Nora Hendry Peters of Cluny, Alberta, who died in Italy in 1944. Peters studied to become a nurse at the Calgary General Hospital and upon graduating in 1933 worked at the St. Michael’s and Galt hospitals in Lethbridge. She enlisted in 1942 and went overseas the following year as a Nursing Sister. Her body is buried at the Caserta War Cemetery, 27 kilometrers north of Naples, Italy.
